The government will also expand this popular health insurance scheme to extend Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana to the country's non-poor population. The government will also bring its various health insurance schemes within the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. It will not only take advantage of the poorer sections of the country but also other people who have an affordable health insurance scheme. The NHA has given permission for its pilot project.

The Central government is currently providing cashless health insurance cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per family every year to about 10.74 crore poor and needy families (about 53 crore beneficiaries) under its flagship scheme. According to a report by Live Mint, the management committee of the National Health Authority (NHA), the implementing body, has on Thursday allowed the introduction of insurance at the pilot level to cover the middle class or non-poor population of different sections of the country, such as unorganized sector workers, self-employed, professionals, and employees of the small and medium enterprises. The pilot project will reveal what steps have to be taken to effectively implement the scheme.

According to the report, the Management Committee of the National Health Authority has also approved the proposal to integrate the existing health schemes of central ministries with Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. It may be recalled that Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan had recently chaired the meeting to review the implementation of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. The main issue of discussion during the meeting was the impact of coronavirus on the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Ayushman Bharat Scheme from the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on the birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar on 14th April 2018. The benefit of the scheme can be taken anywhere in the country in private or government hospitals impaneled.
